6 Tips for an Organized Warehouse

An organized warehouse increases efficiency while decreasing the risk of errors and accidents, thereby resulting in less money and time lost. The backbone of a warehouse, therefore, is its shelving system. Here are six tips to ensure yours is up to the task.

  • Plan for efficiency: Efficient use of your warehouse space begins with a floor plan, and while your first instinct may be to maximize storage space, remember that the aisles need to be wide enough for forklifts and employees to navigate safely. Wider aisles allow forklift drivers to work more efficiently and will reduce the risk of accidents.
  • Invest in pallet racking: Pallet racking systems maximize storage capacity by taking advantage of vertical space. This frees up floor space and makes it easier to ensure your warehouse’s aisles are an appropriate width. Pallet racking comes in a range of types, so it’s a good idea to consult a professional who can help you design the ideal storage system for your particular space and needs.
  • Organize loads: Storing heavy pallets on the lowest shelves and bays will reduce the risk of an accident occurring. This also goes for loose items. Even if there’s no risk to the shelving, storing heavy merchandise closer to the floor will help prevent injuries. You should also avoid stacking merchandise too high.
  • Inspect shelving: Regular inspections are the best way to keep your employees safe and to ensure your business can function properly. A professional will be able to spot signs that your shelving needs to be repaired or replaced, and employees should report any damage. Catching problems early allows you to solve them before they require expensive and time-consuming repairs.
  • Clean up: Don’t let clutter accumulate on the side of the aisles. First, if merchandise is on the floor, it’s not on the shelves and employees may lose valuable time looking for something that’s not where it’s supposed to be. Secondly, cluttered aisles are a serious safety hazard.
  • Train workers: Your employees are the ones who work with the shelving system every day, and its efficiency is only as good as their training. Make sure they’re familiar with your organizational system and all warehouse safety guidelines. Properly trained employees will be able to work efficiently and safely.
